Will I have cell service in US national parks?

Sometimes. The National Park Service says service varies widely and can be inconsistent even within a single park, and carrier maps are only approximate. Check the park's Basic Information page, download the NPS App's offline content and maps before you arrive, and expect no signal on many trails and backroads.

Is there signal in Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon or Yosemite?

Visitor centres, lodges and park villages often have some service. Large parts of these parks, especially trails, canyons and remote roads, may have none. Each park's official NPS page describes internet and cellular access. Plan to navigate offline and agree meeting points with your group in advance.

Does a US eSIM work in Hawaii and Alaska?

Hawaii and Alaska are US states, but check that the plan covers them in the plan details above. Coverage in both is concentrated around towns and main roads. Alaska has huge areas with no mobile service, and regional operators such as GCI play a bigger role there. Download maps before heading out of town.

Which mobile networks are there in the US?

T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T run the three national networks. In Opensignal's June 2025 report, T-Mobile won the most awards, including reliability and download speed. Verizon won Coverage Experience for the fourth time running, and AT&T led on Availability. The US plans on this page list Verizon and AT&T as local networks.

Will a US eSIM work in Canada or Mexico?

The US plans are designed for use in the United States. For trips that cross a border, the Canada and United States bundle and the Canada, Mexico and United States bundle listed on this page cover those countries. Near a border, your phone may connect to a Canadian or Mexican network before you cross.

What happens to my data in Denali and the Alaskan backcountry?

Expect very little. Service is available near the park entrance area, but most of the Denali Park Road and the backcountry beyond it have no coverage. That is typical for wilderness Alaska. Download maps and information before you go, and don't rely on mobile service for emergencies.

How much data do I need for a US road trip?

As a rough guide, Ericsson estimates the average North American smartphone uses about 25 GB a month, or around 6 GB a week used as you would at home. Streaming navigation, music and video adds more: Netflix estimates up to 3 GB an hour for HD. Offline maps and playlists help stretch your data.

Do I need a US phone number?

For most holidays, no. Teraroma eSIMs are data-only, so your home number stays active for calls and texts, and messaging and calling apps work over data. A US number can help if you're staying longer, receiving texts from US banks or delivery services, or calling many local businesses.

US eSIM Coverage, from City Centres to the Open Road

The United States has three big national networks and a lot of scenery between them. In cities, suburbs and along the Interstate highways, coverage is broad and you will rarely think about it. Problems tend to start in the places many visitors come to see: national parks, desert backroads, mountain passes and the empty stretches of the West.

The three national operators are T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T. Opensignal's June 2025 report shows how they differ:

T-Mobile won the most awards, including Reliability Experience and the download speed categories.
Verizon won Coverage Experience for the fourth report in a row.
AT&T led Availability, meaning the share of time users spent connected.

Regional operators also matter in some areas, such as GCI in Alaska. The US plans on this page list Verizon and AT&T as local networks.

National parks deserve their own planning. The National Park Service manages more than 400 parks and says cell service varies widely and can be inconsistent even within a single park. Carrier coverage maps give only a rough idea. The NPS suggests checking each park's "Basic Information" page and downloading content in the NPS App for offline use before you arrive. In large parks like Yellowstone, Denali or Death Valley, expect long stretches without signal. Hawaii and Alaska are part of the US, but if your trip includes them, check that your plan covers them and look at local coverage. Alaska in particular has vast areas with no service.

How much data? Ericsson estimates the average North American smartphone uses about 25 GB a month. Used as you would at home, that is about 6 GB for a week or 12 GB for a fortnight. A city break on hotel Wi-Fi may use much less. A road trip that streams music and maps all day, or HD video, can use much more: Netflix estimates up to 3 GB an hour for HD.

Before you leave:

Install the eSIM over Wi-Fi.
After you land, switch the eSIM line on and set it as your data line.
Enable data roaming for that line, and leave roaming off on your home SIM.

When might a US SIM be better? If you are staying for several months, need a US phone number for banking, deliveries or two-factor texts, or will be calling local numbers a lot, a prepaid plan from a US carrier or one of their budget brands can work out better. You will need an unlocked phone that supports US bands. For a typical holiday of one to three weeks, a travel eSIM avoids the store visit and setup.
