What Devices Are Compatible with eSIMs?

Check if your device supports eSIM technology. Search from our comprehensive list of compatible smartphones, tablets, laptops, and smartwatches.

    How to Check eSIM Compatibility

iPhone: Go to Settings → General → About. If you see "Digital SIM" or "Available SIM", your device supports eSIM.

Android: Dial *#06#. If you see an EID number, your device supports eSIM.

Check carrier lock: Ensure your device is not carrier-locked, as this may prevent eSIM activation.

The complete list of eSIM compatible devices (updated October 2026)

You need two things to use a Teraroma eSIM:

    1. A device with eSIM hardware. This section lists those devices.
    2. A device that is not carrier-locked. See "Is your phone carrier-locked?" further down.

Region matters. The same model can have eSIM in one country and not in another, especially models sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao. If you're not sure, use the quick check below. It's more reliable than any list.

Quick check: does my phone have eSIM?

    • Any phone: dial *#06#. If you see an EID (a long 32-digit number) alongside the IMEI, your phone has eSIM hardware. If there's no EID, it probably doesn't. (Most phones show the EID this way, but some Android models don't. If yours shows nothing, use the settings check for your brand.)
    • iPhone: Settings > General > About. Scroll down. If you see an EID, your iPhone supports eSIM. You can also go to Settings > Mobile Service (or Cellular) and look for Add eSIM.
    • Samsung Galaxy: Settings > Connections > SIM manager. Look for Add eSIM.
    • Google Pixel: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > + Add SIM. Look for Download a SIM instead?

    Apple iPhone

Every iPhone from the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR (2018) onwards supports eSIM, except some models sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao (see below).

iPhone with eSIM plus a physical SIM slot

    • iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR
    • iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max
    • iPhone SE (2nd generation, 2020)
    • iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max
    • iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max
    • iPhone SE (3rd generation, 2022)
    • iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max (bought outside the US)
    • iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max (bought outside the US)
    • iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max, iPhone 16e (bought outside the US)
    • iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, iPhone 17e (bought outside the eSIM-only countries listed below)
    • iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max (bought outside the eSIM-only countries listed below)

iPhone with eSIM only (no SIM tray)

    • iPhone Air and iPhone Duo: eSIM-only everywhere.
    • iPhone 14, 15 and 16 series and iPhone 16e bought in the United States.
    • iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, iPhone 17e, iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max bought in the United States, US Virgin Islands, Guam, Canada, Mexico, Japan, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman.

If your iPhone is eSIM-only, a travel eSIM is the only way to add a second line. Teraroma works well here.

Dual eSIM: every eSIM iPhone can hold several eSIMs (usually 8 or more) and use two lines at once. On the iPhone 13 and later, both of those lines can be eSIMs, so you can keep your home eSIM switched on alongside your Teraroma eSIM. On the iPhone XS, XR, 11 and 12, the two lines must be one physical SIM plus one eSIM.

iPhones that do NOT support eSIM

    • iPhone X, iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, and every older iPhone.
    • Mainland China: according to Apple, only the iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air support eSIM on models sold there. Most other iPhones sold in mainland China (including most of the iPhone 13 to 17 range) use two physical nano-SIM cards and have no eSIM.
    • Hong Kong and Macao: some iPhone models sold there have two physical nano-SIM slots instead of eSIM. Apple doesn't publish an exact list, so check for an EID (*#06#) if you bought your iPhone in Hong Kong or Macao.

Apple iPad (Wi-Fi + Cellular models only)

    Wi-Fi-only iPads have no eSIM.

    eSIM plus nano-SIM

    • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd to 6th generation)
    • iPad Pro 11-inch (1st to 4th generation)
    • iPad Air (3rd to 5th generation)
    • iPad (7th to 10th generation)
    • iPad mini (5th and 6th generation)

    eSIM only

    • iPad Pro 13-inch and 11-inch (M4, M5)
    • iPad Air 13-inch and 11-inch (M2, M3, M4)
    • iPad (A16)
    • iPad mini (A17 Pro)

No eSIM: iPad Pro 10.5-inch and 9.7-inch, iPad Air (2nd generation or earlier), iPad (6th generation or earlier), iPad mini (4th generation or earlier).

    Apple Watch

Apple Watch cellular models (Series 3 and later, and all Apple Watch Ultra models) do have eSIM. But the watch's plan has to come from the same carrier as your paired iPhone, set up through the Watch app. You can't install a Teraroma eSIM, or any other travel eSIM, on an Apple Watch. Put the Teraroma eSIM on your iPhone instead. Your watch will still get notifications and data through the iPhone over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

    Samsung Galaxy phones

From Samsung's official list (updated September 2026). Samsung notes that eSIM may not be supported in some countries of origin, even if your model is listed.

    • Galaxy S20 FE: generally no eSIM. Older Galaxy A and M models (other than those listed above) have no eSIM.

Samsung Galaxy tablets (5G / LTE models only)

    Wi-Fi-only tablets have no eSIM.

    • Galaxy Tab A11+ (North America only)
    • Galaxy Tab Active5, Active5 Pro

    Samsung Galaxy Watch

LTE Galaxy Watch models have eSIM, but like Apple Watch, the plan is set up through your phone carrier's number-sharing service. Travel data eSIMs like Teraroma can't be installed on a smartwatch.

    Google Pixel

    From Google's Pixel Help pages:

    • Pixel 4 and later: every model supports eSIM. That includes Pixel 4, 4 XL, 4a, 4a 5G, Pixel 5, 5a, Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a, Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a, Pixel Fold, Pixel 8, 8 Pro, 8a, Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold, 9a, Pixel 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, 10 Pro Fold, 10a, and Pixel 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro XL, 11 Pro Fold.
    • Pixel 3a / 3a XL: eSIM works, except on phones bought with Verizon service or in Japan.
    • Pixel 3 / 3 XL: eSIM works only on phones bought with Sprint or Google Fi service in the US/Canada, and not on phones bought in Australia, Taiwan or Japan.
    • Pixel 2 / 2 XL: eSIM works only on phones bought with Google Fi service.
    • Original Pixel (2016): no eSIM.

eSIM-only Pixels: in the US, the Pixel 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, and the Pixel 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro XL have no physical SIM slot. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold, 11 Pro Fold and 10a keep a SIM slot. Pixels sold outside the US have a SIM slot plus eSIM.

Dual eSIM: Pixel 7 and later can run two eSIMs at the same time, if your carrier allows it.

Other Android brands: the lists below come from published manufacturer specifications. eSIM often depends on the country the phone was sold in, so always check your own phone with *#06# before you buy.

Chinese eSIMs: how they differ from a normal travel eSIM

    Why China is different

Inside mainland China, internet access is filtered. Many services you use every day at home, including Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube, are generally not reachable on a Chinese SIM card or on hotel and café Wi-Fi. So a China eSIM isn't just about coverage and price. How your data is routed matters just as much.

All Teraroma eSIMs are roaming eSIMs (data-only)

Every Teraroma eSIM is a roaming eSIM. It connects to local mobile networks as a visiting (roaming) line, rather than being a local Chinese SIM. All Teraroma plans are data-only: you get mobile data, not a Chinese phone number. You can still call and message over data with apps.

Two types of Teraroma China plan

Hong Kong IP plans (green label)

    • These are the plans with plain names, for example "China 10GB 30Days".
    • Your data is routed out of mainland China through Hong Kong, so Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and other apps work normally, as they do at home, without setting up a separate VPN.
    • Best for most travellers who want their usual apps.

Local China IP plans (amber label)

    • These are only the plans with "(nonhkip)" in the name, for example "China 3GB/Day FUP1Mbps (nonhkip)".
    • Your data uses a local Chinese internet connection. That's usually faster, but Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and some other foreign apps may be blocked.
    • Good if you mainly use Chinese apps (WeChat, Alipay, Didi, Amap) and want speed.

On the China page, every plan shows its label: green for Hong Kong IP and amber for Local China IP. Check the label before you buy. We can't guarantee that every app works on every China plan. If a particular app matters to you, choose a Hong Kong IP plan and test it as soon as you arrive.

    Built-in VPN-like protection

Teraroma eSIM traffic is routed through Teraroma's servers, so every plan has VPN-like protection built in. On Hong Kong IP plans, this means you don't need a separate VPN app for your usual apps. On Local China IP plans, some foreign apps may still be blocked.

Check your phone before you buy: China-model phones often lack eSIM

Many phones sold in mainland China (and some sold in Hong Kong and Macao) don't have eSIM, even when the same model has it elsewhere. They use two physical SIM slots instead. For example, Apple says that in mainland China only the iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air support eSIM. Many Chinese-market Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, vivo and Huawei phones are the same. If you bought your phone in China, Hong Kong or Macao, dial *#06# and check for an EID before buying any eSIM.

    Is your phone carrier-locked?

    What carrier-locking means

A carrier-locked (or network-locked) phone only works with the mobile network that sold it. Phones bought on a contract or payment plan are the most likely to be locked. A lock is completely separate from eSIM support: a phone can have eSIM hardware and still be locked. You need both an eSIM-capable phone and an unlocked phone.

Why a locked phone may reject a Teraroma eSIM

A Teraroma eSIM connects through partner networks abroad, not through your home carrier. A locked phone is set to refuse lines from other operators. So you may see an error when you try to add the eSIM, such as "SIM not supported" or "This eSIM can't be added". Or the eSIM may install but never connect to a network.

How to check if your iPhone is locked

    1. Open Settings.
    2. Tap General, then About.
    3. Look next to Carrier Lock. If it says "No SIM restrictions", your iPhone is unlocked. If it shows a carrier name or "SIM locked", it's locked.

How to check if your Android phone is locked

Android has no single setting for this, so try these:

    • Samsung: on some models, Settings > Connections > More connection settings > Network unlock (or "Network lock status"). Not all Samsung phones show this.
    • Any Android, the menu test: Settings > Network & internet (or Connections) > Mobile network > turn off Automatically select network. If you can see and pick other networks, the phone is probably unlocked. If only your carrier appears, it's probably locked. (This is a hint, not proof.)
    • The SIM test: put in a physical SIM from a different network. If you get "SIM not supported" or a request for an unlock code, it's locked.
    • Ask your carrier: this is the most reliable way. Give them your IMEI (dial *#06# to see it) and ask whether the phone is locked.

    How to unlock your phone

    • Only your carrier can unlock your phone. Apple, Samsung and Google can't do it for you. Contact the carrier that sold you the phone, or the carrier it's locked to, and ask for a network unlock. Many carriers do it free through an online form or the app.
    • Carriers usually need the phone to be fully paid off, and some need it to have been active on their network for a minimum period (often around 60 days). The rules differ by carrier and country.
    • In the UK, mobile networks have been banned from selling locked phones since December 2021, so most UK phones bought new since then are already unlocked. Older or second-hand phones may still be locked.
    • On an iPhone, once the carrier confirms the unlock, check that Settings > General > About shows "No SIM restrictions". If it doesn't, restart the phone. Apple also suggests backing up, erasing and restoring if the lock still shows.
    • Avoid paid third-party "unlock" services and apps. Ask your carrier first.

    Before you buy

    • Make sure your phone has eSIM (*#06# shows an EID).
    • Make sure your phone is unlocked ("No SIM restrictions" on iPhone, or confirmed by your carrier on Android).
    • Not sure? Email team@teraroma.io with your exact model and where you bought it, before you buy, and we'll check for you.
