eSIM Not Working? How to Fix Common eSIM Problems
A complete troubleshooting playbook for the most common eSIM problems — from QR codes that won't scan to plans that refuse to activate.

Your travel eSIM should connect within seconds of landing. When it doesn't, the cause is usually one of a small number of recurring issues — and almost all of them are fixable in under five minutes. This guide walks through every common problem in the order to check them.
Start Here: The 30-Second Reset
Before anything else, try this. It fixes more issues than every other step combined:
- Toggle Airplane Mode on, wait 15 seconds, toggle it off.
- Restart the phone entirely.
- Make sure Data Roaming is ON for the travel eSIM line.
- Confirm the travel eSIM is selected as the default mobile data line.
If you're still stuck, work through the issues below.
Problem 1: QR Code Won't Scan
The most common installation failure. Three causes account for almost all of them.
Cause: Screen brightness too low or glare on QR code. Maximize brightness on the device showing the QR code. Move to even, indirect light.
Cause: Camera focus. Hold the phone 6–10 inches away. Some iPhones won't focus on a QR code closer than that.
Cause: QR code already used. Most travel eSIM QR codes are single-use. If you scanned it once already (even on the same phone), it won't work again. Request a fresh code from support.
If scanning still fails, every QR code can be entered manually. The QR contains a string starting with LPA:1$.... Enter it via Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM > Enter Details Manually.
Problem 2: "Could Not Activate eSIM" Error
This appears mid-install on iPhone. Five common causes:
- No internet during install. The phone needs Wi-Fi or working cellular data to download the profile. Connect to Wi-Fi and retry.
- iOS version too old. Update to iOS 16 or later (iOS 18 recommended).
- Carrier lock. A locked phone refuses to install most third-party eSIMs. Contact your original carrier for an unlock.
- eSIM storage full. iPhones hold up to 8 eSIM profiles. Delete an old one via Settings > Cellular.
- Server timeout. Provider servers occasionally rate-limit. Wait 5 minutes and try again.

Problem 3: eSIM Installed But No Service
The eSIM is on the phone, but you see "No Service" or "Searching..." indefinitely.
Fix 1 — confirm the line is on. Settings > Cellular > tap the travel line > Turn On This Line.
Fix 2 — enable Data Roaming. Counter-intuitively, almost every travel eSIM technically roams onto a local partner network and needs this toggle on. Settings > Cellular > [travel eSIM line] > Data Roaming ON.
Fix 3 — set Cellular Data line. Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data > select the travel eSIM.
Fix 4 — Network Selection. Settings > Cellular > [travel eSIM] > Network Selection > toggle Automatic OFF, wait, then ON. Or manually select the strongest local network.
Fix 5 — APN check. Most travel eSIMs use automatic APN, but some require a manual setting like internet, globaldata, or a provider-specific string. Check the eSIM details email.
Problem 4: Slow eSIM Data
You're connected, but speeds are crawling. Three usual suspects:
You're on 3G instead of 4G/5G. Settings > Cellular > [travel eSIM line] > Voice & Data > select 5G Auto or LTE.
You've hit a fair-use throttle. "Unlimited" plans throttle to ~1 Mbps after a daily cap. Check your plan's FUP. If you've hit it, top up via our top-up page.
Weak signal in your location. Step outside, move away from concrete walls, or try a different building. Travel eSIMs use local partner networks — the same coverage issues that affect locals affect you.
Problem 5: Calls Don't Work (Data Does)
Most travel eSIMs are data-only. They don't provision voice. This is normal — keep your home SIM active for calls or use WhatsApp/FaceTime over the eSIM data connection.
If your plan is marketed as supporting voice and calls still fail, check whether your destination needs a specific dialing code or carrier preference.
Problem 6: Can't Send SMS
Same as calls — most travel eSIMs are data-only and won't send SMS. Use iMessage, WhatsApp, Signal, or Telegram over data.
For SMS-based 2FA codes (banking, etc.), keep your home SIM line active. The travel eSIM handles data while your home line still receives texts.
Problem 7: eSIM Worked Yesterday, Now It Doesn't
A few common reasons it stops mid-trip:
- Plan expired. Check the expiration date. Some plans run on calendar days from activation, not from purchase.
- Data allowance exhausted. Top up using your eSIM top-up.
- Crossed a border into a non-included country. Regional plans cover a set list — confirm your country is included.
- iOS update reset cellular preferences. Re-enable Data Roaming and Cellular Data for the line.
Problem 8: Phone Says "SIM Not Provisioned"
This usually means the profile was installed on the phone but the carrier side hasn't activated it yet.
Wait 5–15 minutes, then toggle Airplane Mode off and on. Most eSIMs need a brief synchronization with the carrier network on first use.
If it still fails after 30 minutes, contact your provider's support — they can re-push the profile activation server-side.
Problem 9: "Cellular Plans Not Available" During Install
Three causes:
- The Apple ID region differs from the eSIM region. Sign out and back into the iPhone with the correct region Apple ID (rare requirement, but happens with China/Russia).
- The phone is jailbroken. Travel eSIMs frequently refuse to install on jailbroken devices.
- Network filtering. Some corporate VPNs block eSIM activation servers. Disconnect from VPN, install the eSIM, then reconnect.
Problem 10: Android-Specific Issues
On Samsung, Pixel, and other Android phones:
- Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > tap travel eSIM > toggle ON.
- Preferred network type: set to 5G/LTE.
- Access Point Names (APN): try setting a new APN matching the provider's docs.
- Reset Mobile Network Settings: Settings > System > Reset > Reset Mobile Network Settings. (Doesn't delete eSIMs — just resets connection prefs.)
If you bought a Samsung in Korea or Hong Kong and the eSIM option is missing entirely, the device likely doesn't have eSIM hardware in that region (see our eSIM compatible phones list).
When to Contact Support
If you've worked through this list and the eSIM still won't connect, contact your provider. Have ready:
- The order number / email.
- The phone model and iOS/Android version.
- The exact error message (or "no error, just no service").
- A screenshot of Settings > Cellular showing the installed eSIM.
Teraroma 24/7 support typically resolves activation issues within minutes.
Preventing Issues Before You Travel
A few habits save 99% of trip-day stress:
- Install the eSIM at home, on Wi-Fi, days before departure. Don't toggle it on yet — just install.
- Update iOS or Android to the latest stable release before leaving.
- Pre-download offline maps so you can navigate even if the eSIM glitches.
- Bring a printed QR code backup in case email is unreachable.

FAQs
Why does my eSIM say "No Service" when I land at the airport?
The single most common cause is Data Roaming being off. Travel eSIMs technically roam onto local partner networks and need Data Roaming enabled for the travel line — even though you're paying a prepaid rate.
Can I fix an eSIM problem without internet access?
Most fixes (toggling lines, enabling roaming, restarting) work offline. But re-downloading a profile or installing a new eSIM requires Wi-Fi. Use airport, hotel, or café Wi-Fi.
Will deleting and reinstalling an eSIM cost me data?
No, you're not charged for installing a profile. But if your QR code is single-use, you'll need a fresh code from the provider — most issue replacements free for legitimate activation failures.
Why is my eSIM slower than my friend's local SIM?
Your eSIM rides a roaming partner network, which may be different from the dominant local carrier. Coverage and speed are usually identical in cities but can vary in rural areas.
Can a VPN cause eSIM activation to fail?
Yes. Some VPNs block the activation servers used by Apple and Android during profile install. Disconnect the VPN, install the eSIM, then reconnect.
